Tips for finding good classical music?

I've been noticing for a while now that I enjoy "really intense" classical music. The sort of music where the conductor looks as though he's having a heart attack. I'm partial to string orchestras (violin cello etc.) or piano. Can anyone suggest a composer along with some of their work to get me started? I know I'm basically a musical imbecile, but I'd love to start listening to and understanding classical music more - starting with the sort of music I described above. Thanks in advance!
