Is a guy gay if he braids his hair...?

My boyfriend has long, kinda surfer style hair, and he asked my friend to french braid it for him today because he thought it would be funny. So my friend braided his hair, and afterwards, I was just like..really...wtf. He did end up taking them out and said his intention wasn't to look like a girl and he doesn't want to. He doesn't act like the guys I know that are gay..basically he doesn't act like a girl, just the whole french braiding the hair thing weirded me out I guess, because he definitely looked like a girl. So would a guy have to be gay to do this?
